FAQ

We know that starting pelvic floor physical therapy can be intimidating for some people, so we want you to know exactly what to expect. If you have any questions that aren't answered here please reach out to us! We are here to help!

  • Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Utah is a direct access state which means that you can choose physical therapy without a referral. If you have one, please let us know as it does help us communicate with your healthcare team. If you plan to submit a superbill, your insurance may require a referral.
  • What should I wear?
Whatever you are most comfortable in. We will likely be asking you to move, squat, do some exercise, and possibly run so it is best to come prepared for movement based on your goals.
  • What can I expect on the first visit?
Your first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation. The information gained from this visit helps us to know how to begin treatment and to make a plan for your follow-up visits. We will discuss what you have been experiencing, what things may be impacting your symptoms, and what your biggest priorities and goals are. We will perform a physical examination that may include looking at the strength, flexibility, and position of your back, hips, legs, and abdomen. We will likely test various movements and postures. This will help put together more pieces of the puzzle. An internal examination can also give us a lot of important information about the pelvic region and the pelvic floor muscles. This examination will only be done after a full explanation of how the examination is done. It is performed vaginally and/or rectally. We will ask for your consent to proceed after we make sure you understand the details of the examination. If you choose to proceed, we will step out while you undress and drape with a sheet. Then we will again explain every step as we go, and you can stop or pause at any step. We can also discuss other options if you prefer to delay for this examination for a future visit or if you want to just proceed with treatment. It is important to us that you feel as comfortable as possible during your sessions. After the evaluation is complete, we will discuss the findings, provide education, answer as many of your questions as we can, develop a plan and begin to retrain your body using the most effective treatments for you.
  • Can I attend physical therapy when I am on my period?
Yes! This normal function should not interfere with your life or medical care. We can still do internal treatment if needed, or we can work on whatever is most comfortable you for that session.
  • Can I bring someone to support me at my visit?
Of course! We do not have a medical chaperone available at all times, but can discuss options if needed. You are welcome to bring anyone who helps you feel more comfortable.
